Detailed Solution

In 1948 slavery was abolished in French colonies.
Slavery in France received little criticism during the seventeenth century. The National Assembly undertook protracted discussions about whether or not all French people, including those in the colonies, should be granted human rights. However, it refrained from doing so because of concern for the reaction of businesses whose livelihoods depended on the slave trade. In 1794, the Convention passed legislation that abolished slavery throughout all French overseas holdings. This, however, proved to be a temporary solution since, ten years later, Napoleon brought back slavery. Owners of plantations believed that their freedom included the right to enslave African Negroes to further their financial objectives. In 1848, slavery was finally outlawed in French territories.
