Detailed Solution

Slavery was abolished in 1848 in the French colonies. The Jacobin regime abolished it. Slave trade in the 17th century was common in Europe, Africa and America. The exploitation of labourers helped meet the growing demand for sugar, coffee and indigo in the European market. The cities like Bordeaux and Nantes owed their economic prosperity to the flourishing slave trade in the 17th century. The French merchants sailed to Bordeaux and Nantes to the African Coast and bought slaves from the local chieftains to the French colonies.
