Detailed Solution

Lord Dalhousie annexed Jhansi in 1854.
According to the Doctrine of Lapse, when a protected state's monarch passed away without a natural heir, the state was not passed to an adopted heir as prescribed by the nation's long-standing custom. Except in cases where the British authority approved the adoption, the state was to be annexed to the British dominion. The idea was used to annex many states, notably Satara in 1848 and Nagpur and Jhansi in 1854. Additionally, Dalhousie refused to honour the titles of numerous former rulers or to pay their pensions. Therefore, the Nawabs of Carnatic, Surat and the Raja of Tanjore lost their titles.
