Detailed Solution

The British Government passed the Calico Act in 1720.
The well-known spices were the first source of company earnings from India, but around 1660, Indian textiles surpassed them in importance. Although delicate materials for the wealthy also made a good living, cheap clothing, mostly cotton, found a large market among the English lower classes. As a result, the number of calicoes (cheap cotton fabrics from Calicut) imported into England increased to the point where, to safeguard English manufacturers, Parliament passed the Calico Act in 1720, outlawing the use of calico in clothing or other domestic applications. Following the repeal of the acts in 1774, a flood of investment was made in mill-based cotton spinning and production, which caused the demand for raw cotton to double within a few years and then double every ten years again until the 1840s.
