The decree prohibiting the feudal system of taxes and obligations was passed on August 4 1789.
Bastille was besieged and destroyed on July 14. In the countryside, stories about brigand bands hired by the lords of the manor to eliminate the ripe crops began to circulate. Moreover, some terrified peasants grabbed hoes and pitchforks and stormed the aristocratic residences. They destroyed papers that contained records of manorial dues and looted grain that had been stockpiled. Louis XVI eventually recognised the National Assembly and agreed that a constitution would henceforth be the primary check on his power due to his rebellious subjects' increasing strength. Accordingly, the Assembly enacted a law on August 4, 1789, ending the feudal system of duties and taxes.
