Detailed Solution

The first English factory was set up in 1651 in India. It was located on the banks of the river Hugli. It was the base of operations for the Company's merchants, known as "factors" at the time. The factory contained a warehouse where they kept export goods and offices where Company officials might sit. The Company invited merchants and traders to relocate and settle near the facility as trade grew. It began constructing a fort around the village in 1696. It bribed Mughal officials two years later to grant the Company zamindari privileges over three villages. Kalikata was one of them, and it eventually expanded into the city of Calcutta, or Kolkata.
