Detailed Solution

The first Labour Day in India was celebrated on 1st May 1923 in Chennai (then Madras).

It was organized by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan, led by Comrade Singaravelar (Singaravelu Chettiar), one of the pioneers of the labour movement in India. On that day, he arranged two meetings—one at the Triplicane Beach and another at the Beach opposite Madras High Court—to mark solidarity with workers and to demand better working conditions, fair wages, and an eight-hour workday.

This marked the beginning of Labour Day (or International Workers’ Day, also called May Day) observance in India, aligning the nation with the global labour rights movement.
