Detailed Solution

The first Tamil book was printed in 1578.
Thanks to Francis White Ellis, the then-Collector of Chennai, who founded the Chennai Kalvi Sangam, Thirukkural was the first Tamil book to be published in Tamil was done in 1812. Indians weren't given the go-ahead to start printing presses until 1835. Oct. 20, 1578, is when the first book was published. Henrique Henriques, a Portuguese missionary who also goes by Enrique Enriquez, authored "Thambiraan Vanakkam" on that memorable day using paper that was brought in from China. The romanised Tamil script was used for the first Tamil book in Lisbon in 1554 AD. Tamil scholars began to focus on Kalathur in the nineteenth century, specifically in 1850, as Vedagiri Mudaliar published the Tirukkural with comments for the first time.
