Ganga Action Plan was launched in 1986.
The central government sponsored the Ganga Action Plan. It was launched by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, which is now renamed the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The objective of the Ganga Action Plan was to clean the river and make it free from pollution. An authority was created under it to implement the plan, which was named the National River Ganga Basin Authority. The plan was launched by the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi.
