On 14 January 1986, Indian Prime Minister Shri Rajeev Gandhi launched the Ganga Action Plan, with the primary goal of reducing pollution in the Ganga River, improving water quality through intercepting, diversion, and treatment of domestic wastewater, and classifying grossly polluting units to prevent it. The presence of toxic and industrial chemical waste from highly polluting units entering the river and the diversion and treatment of domestic sewage. Despite some delays in finishing the first step of GAP, it has sparked significant interest and laid the groundwork for establishing a national strategy for repeating the programme for the country's other contaminated rivers.
