When Was the Hayward Cultivar Developed?

The 'Hayward' cultivar, which is the familiar large, fuzzy, green-fleshed kiwifruit that dominates the global market, was developed in New Zealand around 1924.

It was created by a nurseryman named Hayward Wright in Avondale, Auckland. He selected this specific variety from the plants grown from the original seeds. It became commercially popular due to its excellent storage life, large size, and appealing flavour, eventually becoming the standard cultivar for export by the 1960s. Today, it remains the most widely grown green kiwifruit variety in the world.
