Hindu College was established in Benaras in 1791.
Many Company officials believed the British should foster Indian learning rather than Western education and ideas. They believed that institutions should be established to promote the study of old Indian scriptures and to instruct in the poetry and prose of Sanskrit and Persian. According to the administrators, Hindus and Muslims should be taught topics they already knew, respected, and treasured rather than unfamiliar subjects. For this reason, Jonathan Duncan founded the Hindu College at Benaras in 1791 to promote the study of historic Sanskrit scriptures that would be helpful for the government of the nation.
