The Imperial Forest Research Institute was set up in India in 1906. The institute taught about Scientific forestry. However, many ecologists now feel that this system is not scientific. Scientific forestry was an intricate system. Natural forests contain different trees that were cut and replaced by only one tree, planted in straight rows. This system is called a plantation. Forest officials got tasks like- surveying the forests, estimating areas under different types of trees, and making working plans for forest management. Forest officials also planned how much plantation area to cut every year.
