In 1864 the Indian Forest Service was set up.
Dietrich Brandis realised that people needed to be educated in conservation science and that a proper system must be implemented to manage the forests. In addition, it was necessary to create regulations legally for using forest resources. For example, restricted grazing and tree-felling were needed to maintain wood to make lumber. Anyone who cut trees without adhering to the rules had to face the consequences. As a result, Brandis helped draft the Indian Forest Act of 1865 and established the Indian Forest Service in 1864. In addition, Dehradun's Forest Research Institute opened its doors in 1906.
