Detailed Solution

The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885. Congress succeeded the INC and is one of the oldest political parties in the world. The foundation of the INC was laid by A.O. Hume, a retired ICS (Indian Civil Services) officer. The first president of Congress was Womesh Chandra Bannerjee or W.C. Banerjee. It had its first meeting in Bombay. Since its formation, the Congress has tended to have its meeting annually at the end of the year in December month. Not even men but women also played in becoming part of the INC and even became presidents. Annie Besant was the first lady to become the President of Congress. Sarojini Naidu was the first Indian woman to become the Congress President. The Indian National Congress played a significant role in the freedom movement and struggle. It provided a distinct stage for the struggling people of the country and united them to fight for Independence.
