The Khilafat Committee was founded in 1919.
Ottoman Turkey was defeated in the First World War. Additionally, there were rumours that the Ottoman emperor, who served as the spiritual leader of the Islamic world, would be subject to a harsh treaty. In Bombay in March 1919, a Khilafat Committee was established to preserve the Khalifa's temporal authority. Young Muslim leaders like the Ali brothers, Muhammad and Shaukat, started talking with Gandhi about the potential for a coordinated mass movement on the problem. Gandhi viewed this as a chance to include Muslims in a single national cause. He persuaded other leaders to launch a Non-Cooperation Movement at the Congress session in Calcutta in September 1920.
