Detailed Solution

  • The Calcutta Madrasa, (later Calcutta Aliya Madrasa) was the first state-run school in India during British control.
  • The Bengal Government seized control of it in April 1782 after it was established by Governor General Warren Hastings in October 1781 with all of his expenses paid by him for a year and a half, of course fully refunded subsequently.
  • It was moved from Baithakkhana, a neighborhood near Sealdah in Calcutta, to its current location in Wellesley Square in 1827.
  • Mulla Majduddin, its first head preceptor, was a learned scholar of Islam.
