The Mandal commission was set up in 1979.
The Mandal Commission was the 2nd Backward Classes Commission, which the Government of India appointed in 1979 and was led by B.P. Mandal. It was chosen to establish the standards for identifying India's socially and educationally underprivileged sections and to suggest measures that should be implemented to advance them. The main recommendation was to reserve 27% of government positions for socially and educationally disadvantaged groups. The primary arguments against it were that the reservation would undermine its worth a that it couldn't be granted based on economics.
