Detailed Solution

NHRC stands for National Human Rights Commission and was established by law in 1993. It is an independent public body constituted under the Protection of Human Rights. The commission is appointed by the President and includes retired judges, officers, and eminent citizens. It works for the protection of human rights. However, NHRC cannot by itself punish the guilty, it can summon witnesses, question any official paper, visit any prison for inspection, or send its team for on-the-spot inquiry. It is there to make an independent and credible inquiry into any case of violation of human rights. The commission presents its findings in court on behalf of the citizens.
