Detailed Solution

In 1956 only the Sinhala Act passed in Sri Lanka to recognise Sinhala as the only official language.
The Official Language Act No. 33, or the Only Sinhala Act, was enacted by Sri Lanka's democratically elected government in 1956 declaring the country's official language as Sinhala only. Before the passage of this statute, Tamil lacked formal recognition. After Sri Lanka gained Independence in 1948, the leaders of the majority Sinhala community sought to secure dominance over the elected government by adopting a series of majoritarian measures establishing their supremacy. Sinhala candidates were given preference by the government while hiring for government positions and academic positions. Such practices strained communal relations and eventually led to a civil war.
