In 1793 The Permanent Settlement was introduced.
The rajas and taluqdars were recognised as zamindars under the conditions of the agreement. They were tasked with collecting rent from peasants and remitting revenue to the company. The amount to be paid was fixed forever; that is, it was not to be increased in the future. It was considered that this would secure a consistent cash flow into the company's coffers and encourage the zamindars to invest in developing the land. Moreover, because the state's revenue requirement would not be increased, the zamindar would gain from the increased land output.
