Detailed Solution

The Red Fort of Delhi, also called Lal Qila, was constructed between 1638 CE and 1648 CE by Emperor Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal ruler. Construction began soon after Shah Jahan decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi.

The fort took about ten years to complete and became the centrepiece of the new imperial city, Shahjahanabad. Its name comes from the massive red-sandstone walls, which rise up to 33 metres high and extend over 2 kilometres.
