In 2006 the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act was passed.
For centuries, many tribes have been living in the forest areas in India. They consider it as their home and are against its exploitation. However, during the colonial and post-independence eras, these forest areas began to be exploited indiscriminately for the wide variety of resources they provided. While the British did it for their interests, the governments did it for developmental projects. This led to a large-scale displacement of the Adivasi population, and their lives were devastated. The Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, which was passed in 2006, was aimed at rectifying this mistake. It recognized the rights of Adivasis to the land and other resources in the forest areas.
