The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2nd October 2014 by the Government of India. Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is India’s largest cleanliness drive aimed at eliminating open defecation and improving solid waste management.

It was officially launched on 2 October 2014, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The choice of this date was symbolic because Gandhi emphasized cleanliness as central to a healthy society.
