The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878.
The 1820s saw a gradual increase in the number of newspapers. There was a liberal way in which the newspapers were being written. The progressive meant they were very much at the forefront of the colonizers and the educated Indians. The Colonial British Government thought that encouraging the publication of newspapers would not only celebrate British supremacy but also promote their authority. But all these backfired, and the Englishmen were very much discontent with the materials which were being printed in the newspapers.
Moreover, the Vernacular newspapers turned out to be very nationalistic, which was not liked by the rulers. As a result, in 1878, the Vernacular Press Act was passed, cancelling the old liberal laws that liberalized Thomas Macauly was framing. The Vernacular Press Act contained the characteristics of the Irish Press Laws. The Vernacular Press Act brought restrictions upon what could be written in the newspapers. Thus the newspapers of various provinces were being monitored by the Britishers. People not adhering to the law also faced brutal punishment at the hands of the British.
