Detailed Solution

In 1947, the boundaries of several old States of India were changed to create new States.
The formation of linguistic states was the first and most significant test of democracy in India. This was done to ensure that individuals speaking the same language resided in the same State. Some states were established not on the basis of language, but to recognise cultural, ethnic, or geographical diversity, like Nagaland, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand. When the proposal to establish States based on language was voiced, several national leaders worried it would lead to the country's fragmentation. The Central Government initially opposed linguistic states. However, history has demonstrated that the emergence of linguistic States has strengthened national unity and simplified administration.
