In 1937, elections were held for the provincial legislature and ministries all over British India.
Under the guidelines of the 1935 Government of India Act, provincial elections were held in 1937. However, the left-wing opposed running in the provincial elections within Congress. Participating in the elections, in their view, would weaken their position and entail working with the oppressive government. A post-election appointment would entail "responsibility without power." The election took place in 11 provinces across the nation because holding office would diminish the revolutionary nature of the movement. The Indian National Congress won a majority and took control of eight of these.
