Detailed Solution

In Bombay,  the first factories were set up. The first cotton mill was built in 1854, and it began operating two years later. This was a landmark moment and spurred on further industrial growth in the country. Four mills with 94,000 spindles and 2,150 looms were in operation by 1862. Jute mills started to appear in Bengal about this time, with the first one opening in 1855 and the second following seven years later in 1862. In the 1860s, Kanpur’s Elgin Mill opened in northern India, and a year later Ahmedabad's first cotton mill opened. The first Madras spinning and weaving factory started operating in 1874.
