The guidelines against sexual harassment of women were formalised in 1997 in India. The women's movement heavily emphasises campaigns to combat violence and prejudice against women. For instance, in the 1980s, when young brides were murdered by their husbands or in-laws in order to obtain more dowry, women's organisations all throughout India spoke out against dowry deaths. Campaigns have also resulted in new legislation being passed. The Supreme Court established guidelines in 1997 to shield women from sexual harassment at work and in educational institutions as a result of the women's movement's efforts.
