Detailed Solution

When white light enters a prism, it gets split into its constituent colours. This is due to the reason that the value of the refractive index is different for different colours.
“When a beam of light is incident on the prism, after undergoing refraction, it splits into seven colours. This phenomenon is called dispersion”. This happens as the wavelength of each colour of light is different. The Refractive index is the numerical representation of the bending of light. Thus, the white light undergoes splitting as the refractive index is different for each wavelength of light.
