Where are gustatory receptors located?

Gustatory receptors are located mainly on the tongue, inside taste buds, but also found in the soft palate and throat.

Gustatory receptors are sensory cells that detect different tastes such as sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. These receptors send signals to the brain to interpret flavors when we eat or drink.

Location of Gustatory Receptors:

• Tongue: Most taste buds are located on the surface of the tongue within tiny structures called papillae.
• Soft Palate: Some receptors are present in the roof of the mouth.
• Pharynx (throat): Few are found near the upper part of the throat.
• Epiglottis: Contains some taste buds as well.

Types of Papillae Containing Taste Buds:

When food dissolves in saliva, molecules interact with these receptors, sending messages through taste nerves to the brain for interpretation.
