There are several kinds of evidence to learn about the past. One is to search for and read books that people wrote long ago. These are known manuscripts because the writers wrote them by hand (this comes from the Latin word ‘manus,’ meaning hand). People usually prepare manuscripts on palm leaves and the specially made bark of a tree known as the birch, which grows in the Himalayas. Insects and dust, over the years, destroyed many manuscripts. The ones that survived stayed preserved in temples and monasteries. Manuscripts dealt with various subjects: religious beliefs and practices, the lives of kings, medicine, and science. They also contained epics, poems, and plays. Many of these are in the Sanskrit language, and some are in Prakrit (languages used by ordinary people) and Tamil.
