Detailed Solution

Nana Saheb belonged to Kanpur.
In the 1857 Indian Revolt, Nana Saheb was a crucial figure. He headed the Kanpur revolt. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Peshwa Baji Rao II had been residing in a Bithoor estate. The British gave him an annual stipend. Since Baji Rao II had no blood heir, he adopted Nana Saheb as his legal heir. According to Lord Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse, any Indian State under British control or any British vassal without a legitimate heir would be annexed by the British. However, after the Peshwa passed away, the British stopped paying Nana Saheb's pension and wouldn't recognise him as the heir.
