The Khonds lived in Orissa. Many tribal communities relied on animal hunting and foraging for food to survive. They regarded forests as critical to their survival. The Khonds were an Orissa forest-dwelling community. Each time they went hunting together, they divided the meat among themselves. They consumed fruits and roots from the forest and cooked with oil extracted from sal and mahua seeds. In addition to using many forest shrubs and herbs for medicinal purposes, they sold forest products in neighbourhood markets. Local weavers and leather workers contacted the Khonds, who required kusum and palash flowers to colour their clothes and leather.
