When the third estate gathered on June 20 in the tennis court hall inside the Versailles Palace gardens, they thought they were speaking for all French citizens. They took oaths of loyalty to one another. They established themselves as the National Assembly before drafting a French constitution. However, it would curtail the monarch's authority and lead to the infamous Tennis Court oath. Mirabeau and Abbe Sieyes were in charge of them. Mirabeau pulled out a notebook and addressed the Versailles audience with stirring speeches. Though he grew up in a wealthy family, he eventually lost interest in his social standing and thought a culture based on feudal privilege should be abandoned.
