The Santhal tribals reared cocoons in Hazaribagh.
Hazaribagh is situated in present-day Jharkhand, where the Santhals cultivated cocoons. The silk traders sent their agents, who issued loans to the tribals and collected the cocoons in the 18th century. For a thousand cocoons, the farmers were paid between Rs 3 and Rs 4. Following their shipment, they were then sold for five times higher prices in Burdwan or Gaya. The intermediaries, therefore, profited enormously. The cultivators of silk made relatively little money. Naturally, a lot of the tribal people considered traders and the market to be their main enemies.
