The first European to travel by sea to India was a Portuguese explorer named Vasco da Gama, the 1st Count of Vidigueira. He made his first trip to India through the Cape of Good Hope. In 1498 CE, Vasco da Gama set sail from Portugal, navigated around the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope, and finally arrived in Calicut on the western coast of India. King Zamorin welcomed him and permitted him to engage in trade. Other Europeans eventually followed in his footsteps. This is often regarded as a turning point in history since it signaled the start of the sea-based phase of world multiculturalism.
