Where digestion occurs inside an amoeba?

In an Amoeba, digestion takes place inside a small sac-like structure called the food vacuole. Amoeba is a single-celled organism, so it doesn’t have organs like humans. Instead, all life processes including digestion happen inside its single cell.

When an amoeba captures food using its finger-like projections called pseudopodia (false feet), the food particle is surrounded and trapped. This forms a small bubble inside the cell called a food vacuole. The food vacuole acts like a mini stomach where digestion occurs.

Inside this vacuole, digestive enzymes are released that break down the complex food into simpler, absorbable forms like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids. These digested nutrients are then absorbed into the amoeba’s cytoplasm to provide energy for growth and movement.

After digestion, any leftover undigested material is pushed out of the cell through a process called egestion. So, in short, digestion in amoeba occurs inside the food vacuole, not in any fixed organ. This process is known as intracellular digestion — meaning it happens within the cell itself.
