Detailed Solution

Most comets come from two distant regions of the solar system: the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. The Kuiper Belt lies just beyond Neptune and contains icy objects that can become short-period comets, which orbit the Sun in less than 200 years. The Oort Cloud is a much larger, spherical area far beyond Pluto. It’s the source of long-period comets that take thousands of years to complete one orbit. These regions are leftovers from the early solar system, filled with icy materials that never became planets. Comets are like frozen time capsules from that era.
