Niyamgiri Hill is located in the Odisha districts of Kalahandi and Rayagada.
 The indigenous Dongria Kondh people, sometimes referred to as Adivasis, live in these highlands. The interior of the hills is home to one of India's best virgin forests. The mining project was abandoned after the Environment and Forest ministry of the Government of India revoked the forest clearance granted to the mining company Vedanta Resources to mine bauxite in the region. The Bauxite Mining Process was disapproved in all village council meetings in 2013, when the Indian Supreme Court ordered the tribal people to decide.
