In Thanjavur, there is a temple named Rajarajeswara. Old Chola inscriptions can be seen on the Rajarajeswara Temple, which blends the ancient Chola and the typical Kerala architecture. The Namaskara Mandapam is in front of the quadrangular sanctum, which has a two-tiered pyramidal roof. According to legend, Tipu Sultan demolished two enormous, seven-story Gopurams that belonged to the Rajarajeswara Temple in the late eighteenth century. But even now, rubble from these Gopurams can be seen scattered everywhere around the Eastern and Western entrances. The bases are still there as well, and based on their commanding presence and exquisite carvings, it is clear that they may have been impressive structures before being destroyed.
