Detailed Solution

Red soil is found mainly in low rainfall areas of the Deccan plateau and some parts of Odisha, foothills of Western Ghats, Chhattisgarh, and southern plains of Ganga. This soil has high levels of organic matter and nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, therefore making it more fertile than laterite soil. This soil is formed by the weathering of igneous and metamorphosis rocks; it is red in colour because of the presence of Iron in it. Red soil also forms the highest soil group in India, with an area of 350,000 sq km i.e., roughly equalling 10% of India’s geographical area.
