Where is the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs?

The asteroid Chicxulub impactor itself is no longer in one piece. The immense energy released during the impact, equivalent to billions of atomic bombs, caused the asteroid to be **completely vaporized** upon hitting the Earth.

Here's what happened in that instant:

1. Impact: The ~10-15 km wide asteroid struck the shallow sea off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula 66 million years ago.
2. Vaporization: The unimaginable heat and pressure from the impact instantly turned the entire asteroid, as well as a large amount of the Earth's crust, into plasma and superheated vapor.
3. Distribution: This vaporized material, including the asteroid's contents, was ejected high into and even above the atmosphere.

Therefore, you cannot find a "piece" of the asteroid. Instead, the remnants of the impactor are distributed globally. This material eventually settled out of the atmosphere, forming a thin, distinct layer of sediment all over the planet known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary layer. This layer is the only remaining "body" of the asteroid.
