The Rajarajeshvara temple is located at Thanjavur. Among temples of the era, the Rajarajeshvara temple in Thanjavur possessed the tallest shikhara. It was difficult to build because no cranes were available then, and the 90-ton stone that made up the top of the shikhara was too heavy to be lifted by hand. In order to move the rock to the top of the temple, the architects constructed an incline on which to roll it. After the temple was built, this was destroyed. However, the locals had fond memories of the temple's construction for a long time. A village close to the temple is still referred to as Charupallam, the "Village of the Incline."
