Detailed Solution

The term ‘Bewar’ is used for shifting cultivation in Madhya Pradesh. Shifting cultivation was carried out on tiny plots of land, particularly in forested areas. Cultivators had to remove the tree tops so that sunlight could reach the ground. Potash-containing ash from the fires used to clear the area on the ground was dispersed to fertilise the soil. An axe was used to clear the trees and scratch the soil to prepare it for farming. The seeds were broadcast or distributed across the field instead of being sown and worked into the soil.
