Detailed Solution

The first gothic church was located in Paris.
Close to Paris (1135–1144), the Basilica of Saint-Denis pioneered the Gothic architectural style. The church was famous for being the site of Saint Denis' martyrdom and the ultimate resting place of virtually all French kings going back to the 7th century. It was renovated under the guidance of Abbot Suger. Gothic cathedrals and churches were built throughout Europe between the middle of the 12th century and the beginning of the 16th century. The cathedrals are especially notable for their high ceilings and significant use of stained glass to light the interior areas. The Gothic architectural style is distinguished by massive stained glass windows, pointed arches, vaulted ceilings, flying buttresses, and gargoyles or other ornate decorations. The statues adorning the exterior of Gothic cathedrals were once beautifully painted. With shards of blue, black, and green, the cloaks or faces of the biblical characters have reappeared.
