Jamshedpur was the place where the first iron and steel plant was set up in India. It was set up by Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata. It was named Tata Iron and Steel Company[ TISCO]. The industry played a major role in producing equipment during the First World War for the colonial government. It was located on the banks of the rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai. This plant was set up near the river keeping in mind the use of water in industrial production and water treatment for the industry.
