The first successful modern textile mill was established in Mumbai. The cotton textile industry is known to be one of the oldest industries to exist. Before the 18th century, cotton was made using ancient, traditional hand-spinning techniques, which were quite expensive. Later during the 18th century, power looms came into the market, first in Britain and later in other parts of the world. Mumbai was the first country in India to establish a mechanised cotton textile mill. It had all the requirements for a cotton textile-like moist climate, a port facility to import machinery, and easy access to raw materials.
