The State Assembly election in which Chaudhary Devi Lal was elected as the Chief Minister in 1987 was in Haryana. He was the founder and leader of the Lok Dal party, which ruled for four years in the state. He led a movement called the Nyaya Yudh movement. Nyaya means justice, and Yudh means strife. The party was founded as a front against the ruling Congress Party. The Lok Dal Party had sought to address their plight by waiving their loans upon winning the 1987 state elections.
