Rowlatt Act was hurriedly passed through the Imperial Legislative Council despite the united opposition of the Indian members.
Hence, Gandhiji started a nationwide satyagraha in protest of the proposed Rowlatt Act (1919). Despite the Indian members of the Imperial Legislative Council joining in opposition, the parliament hurriedly accepted this Act. It allowed the government the authority to restrict political involvement and permitted the two-year arrest of political detainees without charge. Mahatma Gandhi called for nonviolent civil disobedience starting on April 6 with a hartal in response to such unjust laws. Many cities organised rallies, railway workshop workers went on strike, and businesses stopped. Thus the British government imposed restrictions on nationalists in reaction to the mass revolt.
